When it comes to celebrity meltdowns there will always be one name that people remember and the only thing more shocking than the fall was the fact that nobody saw it coming. Yes, we’re talking about Queen of Pop, Britney Spears. In 2007, the blonde haired beauty did something that the world had never seen a star of her calibre do before – she shaved off her hair in front of hordes of waiting, gawping paparazzi.

Now, after it quickly became apparent that this wasn’t a ploy to get attention or sell a new album, Britney was hidden away by her family, who made it clear that she was in the midst of a full emotional breakdown. Nobody thought that she’d ever come back from the crisis. It was too strange, too embarrassing, and too intimate. Yet, five years later she was on the road to recovery and back to releasing insanely catchy tunes.

We can’t imagine how much personal strength it must take to be Britney Spears. But, we’re couldn’t be more glad that she’s back on top and blowing divas half her age right out of the water. So, let’s take a little look at some of her finest hairstyle moments.

The ‘Are You Britney Spears?’

If you hadn’t noticed yet, Britney Spears has just joined what might be the most annoying advertising campaign in recent British history. Alongside Kevin Bacon, she’s taking advantage of the fact that retro is in and having a bit of a joke about her early career. At least she looks fantastic, which is more than we can say for Bacon in that hideous red suit. Her tresses are fresh, feminine, and super healthy. They’ve kept her hair quite simple for the commercials, presumably because they want her to have that instantly recognisable appeal. So, she’s got the glamorous blonde highlights and the long, feathered hair extensions.

The Throwback Thursday

We remember when this photo was released and the press went wild. They couldn’t get enough of this teen superstar, with her innocent sexuality and teasing smile. In fact, this is one of our all-time favourite Britney looks, because the big Bardot style hair just screams fun and femininity. It’s sultry, slinky, and just the right amount of dramatic. If you want to steal this one for yourself, you need to start doing some serious backcombing. Also, placing small rollers underneath the bottom layers of hair – but not all the way through – can be a quick way to add lift and boost the whole style.

The Girl on the Yacht

The Britney of today is laid back, relaxed, and doesn’t take herself too seriously. She’s had some tough years and nobody can deny her the chance to live life to the full with her two boys. And, when she’s not on stage, it’s what you’ll find her doing; usually on a big boat in a country with great food and lots of sun. Check out this snap and take some laid back hair inspiration from a lady who knows how to rock a set of clip in hair extensions. While it’s important to treat your extensions with love and care, they’re not so fragile that they can’t be bundled up into cute and messy chignon when you need a quick hair fix.

The Backwards Halo Crown

Or, for a more structured – but still pretty relaxed – vibe, you could try this doughnut style braid. Instead of braiding around the crown, in a halo fashion, Britney has wound her braid around the bottom of her head. This creates a really cool ‘Rita Hayworth-esque’ bunching at the front, as you can see the definition and shape of the curls. As this look works better with tousled, unclean locks, you don’t even have to worry about washing them first. Add a small flower corsage or something sparkly for a bit of bling and eye catching detail.
