For film fans in the UK, the Oscars are a bittersweet treat, we get to hear all of the news as it happens as our social media feeds are inundated with updates on the best dresses, makeup, and hair, but we don’t all get to actually watch any of it unless we have a fancy cable TV package. So, it can feel like a bit of anti-climax.
This year, however, it was all about the red carpet. The question on everybody’s mind was: ‘Who is going to show up?’ After months of controversy and a wealth of black and mixed race actors announcing their intention to boycott the awards, it was actually quite a friendly and affectionate party in the end. And, of course, our boy Leo finally got his hands on the prize!
In the ClipHair office, we’ve been talking about the best hairstyle moments of the 2016 Oscars all week, so we thought we’d share our thoughts.
Alicia Vikander
If you, somehow, still don’t know who Alicia Vikander is, you’re soon to find out. This remarkable Swedish actress dazzled in The Danish Girl and the role bagged her an Academy Award. She was the picture of elegance and class at the ceremony, teaming a pastel yellow gown with a delicate and romantic ‘half up half down’ do. It is a simple look, but one which suits her down to earth appeal and doll like features. The loose ‘tie back’ at the crown adds interest and stops the style from being drab.
Jennifer Lawrence
We’ve become so used to Jennifer Lawrence cleaning up during awards season that it felt kind of strange not to see her climb those stairs this year. We can’t fault her choice of hairstyle though – she may have returned to a tried and tested look, but if isn’t broke, why fix it? We love this beautiful ‘Rachel style’ lob. The angled cut and centre parting keep it fresh and modern, while the honey blonde colour warms her skin and really brings out those green eyes.
Sofia Vergara
At the 2016 Oscars, Modern Family star, Sofia Vergara, once again proved that she never has a bad day on the red carpet. She rocked a very long and luscious low slung ponytail. Apparently, the actress relied on nothing but the strength of her natural hair to create it, but we recommend cheating if yours isn’t quite as long. Pick up a 20 inch clip in extension and attach it halfway down your head. Blend it carefully with your natural tresses and then draw it together to form a slick and sophisticated pony.
Daisy Ridley
The beautiful Daisy Ridley has really become ‘one to watch’ as far as red carpet style goes and the 2016 Oscars were no exception. She not only rocked a gorgeous dress – by Chanel, which is surely what every girl dreams of at her very first Oscars’ appearance – she teamed her beaded gown with an ornate twisted chignon. Her fringe was pulled back, to allow her features to do the talking and indulge some of that red carpet smouldering. The style is somehow both intricate and simple. It looks like a pretty upscale ‘do, but its beauty does not get lost in too much fuss or detail.
