How to Create a Big Volume Ponytail with Clip in Hair Extensions
If you're looking to create a volumized ponytail, with elegance and length, clip in hair extensions are the answer.
Whilst ponytail clip ins are an easy fix from messy-chic to sexy chic, you can add some extra sass and volume to your look with a set of your favourite clip in extensions. Perfect if you have short hair, or thin hair, using clip in extensions will allow you to experiment with some of the more ambitious styles. It doesn’t have to take all afternoon and an army of stylists to look good - you just need to have the know-how.
In today’s blog, we go through a four-step guide on how to achieve the perfect ponytail using your clip in human hair extensions. Read more to find out how you can create a volumized ponytail.
Step 1: Choose the right hair extensions for you
When searching for the ideal hair extensions, you need to find a product which matches the colour and texture of your natural locks. The best way to do this is to compare colour and style with the mid to end lengths of your own hair, because the roots tend to start off dark and then get lighter. Read here to discover how to choose the right hair extensions if you have thin or fine hair, or here if you have medium to thick hair.
Step 2: Create a base
Start by creating a base for your clip in extensions; take a small section from the top of your head or where you want the ponytail (either high, low, or mid-level on your scalp) and tie it into a mini ponytail. Clip in the smallest weft from your set around the ponytail. After you make sure it’s securely clipped in, continue adding wefts by size around the ponytail. Use as many as you need to achieve the thickness you want.
Step 3: Brush back
Brush your natural hair with the hair extensions back and gather all your hair into a ponytail. Run through your hair using a wide toothed comb or brush to remove any tangles or knots. Secure the ponytail with a hair tie. If there are any problem ‘fly-away’ strands in either your natural hair or the extensions, use a comp to brush them down – don’t hesitate to apply a little gel for control for a sleek look.
Step 4: Wrap around
For a sleek look, take some hair strands from the ponytail and wrap it around the base of the ponytail to cover the hair tie. Secure the hair with bobby pins to finish your look. Check our article for more on wrap around ponytails.
Styling your ponytail:
If you are creating a low ponytail, you will need to clip in your extensions as you would normally. You can wear a full set or a one-piece quad weft for added volume. Gently back comb your hair at the crown. Pull hair into ponytail and secure with a hair. Comb away stubborn flyaways and finish off your look; you can curl and straighten human hair extensions.
You can use the same process to get as creative as you like with your ponytails. You can go for a super voluminous half-up half-down ponytail, or perhaps try some stunning braid styles like this Elsa-inspired braid.
