How to be a Redhead – Q&A Session with Adrienne and Stephanie Vendetti

Who run the world? Redheads. At least, that's what sisters Adrienne and Stephanie Vendetti think. Adrienne and Stephanie created HowtobeaRedhead.com in 2011 to celebrate redheads in both the fashion and beauty sector. Co-founders of HowtobeaRedhead.com, authors of the “How to be a Redhead” beauty book and curators of the monthly H2BAR Beauty Box, Adrienne and Stephanie have come leaps and bounds from their humble redheaded beginnings. To celebrate National Redhead Day (November 5th), we sat down with the girls to discuss their favourite beauty tips for redheads, their fiery formula of success to help you learn exactly how to be a redhead,

Q&A with Adrienne and Stephanie

You created the website to inform and celebrate redheads’ within the fashion and beauty sectors, when did you both come up with the idea to create this platform?

“I never dyed my natural red hair but struggled to find beauty products that catered to young and trendy redheaded women. Stephanie experimented with shades of red and blonde but had trouble finding fashion pieces to complement her natural features. Growing up with these ‘redhead problems’, we decided to launch “How To Be A Redhead” for redheads—natural or bottled—around the world to finally have a place to turn to for their specific needs. The site was officially launched in January 2011.”

When did you start wearing makeup?

“We both started wearing makeup in middle school. Our mum was/is big into makeup and started us both off with a powder foundation and mascara. When I was a teenager, I went blonde to “fit in”, but realized I felt and looked best with my natural red locks. As young girls, we both had trouble finding ‘Redhead Friendly’ products because most items caused our skin to irritate or break out. Many makeup consultants at department stores shied away when we would ask which mascara or blush matched our fair complexion. We took it upon ourselves to test and try different types of products and love expressing our fun redhead personalities with pops of colour in the wardrobe.”

— Stephanie

What has been the greatest struggle in getting your message to a global audience?

“There’s just two of us – ha! I am kidding, but we’ve grown our team immensely over the past several years and are proud to be a women-owned and operated company. Adrienne and I always say we balance each other because her strengths are my weaknesses and vice versa. We’re able to reach a global audience thanks to social media! Our shop sends packages to international addresses daily. It’s really amazing!”

— Stephanie

Since starting HowtobeaRedhead.com, what has been your greatest achievement?

“I think our greatest achievement is our consistency. We have worked on HowtobeaRedhead.com every single day since we launched in early 2011. If it wasn’t for our dedicated, steady work ethic, all of our other achievements wouldn’t have happened.”

 — Adrienne

What is the main message you aim to convey to your audience?

We started HowtobeaRedhead.com to empower all redheads across the world to embrace their red hair. It’s all about Rockin’ it like a Redhead!

What is your must-have redhead hair product?

Stephanie – Colour depositing shampoo

Adrienne – Dry shampoo

What beauty brand, in your opinion, caters best to redheads?

“How to be a Redhead, of course 😊! In February, we launched a brow gel called ‘Finally Have Brows®’ and we’re launching another eyebrow product this Autumn. Spoiler! Several mascaras are in the soon-to-be-released products line-up for 2022 too!”

 — Stephanie

How is red hair different from others?

“Well, statistically, we’re very different. Redheads actually have less hair than most other people! On average they only have 90,000 strands of hair while blondes, for example, have 140,000. However, red hair is typically thicker, so it still looks just as full. And we can’t forget the colour itself. It’s the rarest colour on the planet (if you’re natural)!”

What tricks can you do to make your eyelashes look longer?

“Curl them! This will get them longer and ready for mascara.”

 — Stephanie

What colours complement a redhead’s hair and complexion best?

“All of them! We firmly believe a redhead can rock any colour – from reds to whites to blues. Redheads may need to change up their makeup/hair to adjust to the different colours. For instance, wear a bit more mascara and bronzer (maybe even a bright lip shade) when wearing white. We do say the core ‘Redhead Friendly’ colours are jewel tones like purple, blues, green and cranberry; they just look so fabulous on redheads!”

 — Adrienne

Who’s your favourite celebrity redhead and why?

“We grew up watching Lucille Ball on I Love Lucy with our nana, who was a natural redhead. We also absolutely love Jessica Chastain and Julianne Moore. They are empowering and truly rock their red hair with pride.”

 — Stephanie

What are the best budget-friendly products for redheads?

“We offer a ton of budget-friendly products in our redhead shop – from colour depositing shampoos to lip glosses to eyebrow gels! See more amazing products here."

 — Adrienne

If you could leave the house using just ONE beauty product, what would it be?

“It’s a toss-up between mascara + brow gel!”

 — Stephanie

What are the most common questions a redheads have to answer?
