How To Create a Romantic French Twist Updo
Inspired by the ‘French roll’ or ‘French twist’ hairstyle, this classic hairdo has finally had its modern makeover! Updos with bangs are all the rage, and this hairstyle is no exception to this beloved new style. With this bridal updo, we’ve incorporated some flattering half bangs to gently frame the face. Whether you’re a bridal hairstylist or not, make sure you gather all your tools and products before you begin creating this masterpiece.
You’ll need bobby pins to secure the twist in place, a hair elastic or band to hold your ponytail, and our Detangling Hairbrush for extra smoothness. A texturising spray will also add grip to your hair, making it easier to style, and hairspray will ensure a long-lasting hold. Decorative hairpins or clips will add a touch of sparkle to your finished look.
Follow these steps to achieve a bridal look that’s both classic and contemporary:
- Washing: Start with clean hair, ideally washed, and dried the night before. Day-old hair often holds styles better than freshly washed hair.
- Hair Prep: Apply texturising spray to give your hair the grip it needs for the twist to stay in place. Next, add volume to your hair by gently teasing the crown with a fine-tooth comb. Tease in small sections with our Pintail Comb and spray with hairspray for hold.
- Create Your Twist: If you want to section the hair into an upper and lower half, you can do so by using our Sectioning Clips to hold the upper half of the hair in place while you curl the ends. Once curled or styled to your liking, form the base of your twist by gathering your hair into a low ponytail at the nape of your neck.
- Secure In Place: Secure it with a hair elastic, but don’t pull the elastic too tight against your scalp. Now, create the twist by holding the ponytail with one hand and twisting it upwards, tucking the ends into the base. As you twist, use bobby pins to secure the twist along the seam.
- Smooth and Silky: Continue to pin the twist in place, making sure it feels secure. You can use as many pins as needed to ensure the twist stays put throughout the day. Smooth any fly-aways with a small amount of hairspray. You can also use a toothbrush sprayed with hairspray for precision.
- Accessorise: To finish, add decorative pins or clips to the twist for a bit of drama. Pearl or crystal pins are particularly beautiful and romantic. For the ultimate inspiration, whether it’s flower crowns, vines or diamante clips, you can browse them all in our blog Top Bridal Accessories

Maintaining Your Bridal Look
Your wedding day will be full of excitement and activities, so here are some tips to ensure your hairstyle stays flawless from "I do" to the first dance. Bring a touch-up kit that includes extra bobby pins in case any pins come loose, a mini medium hold hairspray for quick fixes and taming those pesky fly-aways, and a Pintail Comb or Detangling Hairbrush to maintain volume and smooth out any frizz throughout the day.
If you’re wearing a veil, opt for a lightweight one. Heavier veils can put pressure on your hairstyle and may cause it to droop. Make sure your veil is securely fastened. Ask your stylist to pin it in a way that won’t disrupt the twist.
For outdoor weddings, weather-proof your style by using humidity-resistant hairspray and anti-frizz serum to keep your hair smooth and sleek. A stronger-hold hairspray will ensure every strand stays in place, come rain or shine.
Slicked back hair is trending now more than ever! With this snatched top knot, your locks will be completely sealed in place throughout the day, with an option to take out some lighter hairs at the front of your head to gracefully frame your face. Paired with a bun of your choice, try taking things up a notch with some glitzy accessories such as beads or pins to insert into the bun and make it the focal point of your hair.
