10 of the Best Christmas Movie Hairstyles

10 of the Best Christmas Movie Hairstyles

As the end of 2015 draws ever closer, two things have started to happen (besides the office Christmas parties). Right on cue, we’re are seeing a glut of Christmas movies being released just in time for the festive period. And, as has become a time honoured tradition, many of these movies are being hotly tipped for Oscars season in a few short months.

Just take a look at the new Jennifer Lawrence film Joy, for example. With the Queen of Hollywood in the lead role and David O Russell at the helm (who has been nominated for four Academy Awards, no less), how could this gutsy tale of a single mother with a dream possibly fail? It is perfect for Christmas, because we all love rooting for the underdog at this time of year.

To celebrate the Christmas Day release of Joy and our irrepressible love for festive flicks, this is the ClipHair guide to the 10 best Christmas movie hairstyles.

Winona Ryder in Edward Scissorhands

It’s alarming to realise that cult classic Edward Scissorhands has just turned 25. It’s lucky that the ever alluring Winona Ryder sports a timeless ‘do which has aged quite well. This ‘all American’ bleached blonde cut made a big impact on film fans at the time, precisely because it was so far away from the grungy, boyish styles usually favoured by the star.

Keira Knightley in Love Actually

You might just have a heart of stone if you don’t like Love Actually – or Keira Knightley and her desperately tender scenes with The Walking Dead star Andrew Lincoln. The iconic hairstyle moment from this movie sees Keira walk down the aisle rocking a simple, but pretty, updo. The loose strands add a touch of romanticism and fun.

Judy Garland – Meet Me in St Louis

This truly epic 40’s style combination of blunt bangs and poker straight locks is perfect for the party season. It might be one hell of a retro style, but the old fashioned look is hot this winter. To steal this creation for yourself, pick up the longest clip in extension that you can find; make sure that it’s pre-styled and very straight. Then, use a roller to put a wave in your bangs.

Cameron Diaz in The Holiday

As usual, Cameron Diaz looks flawless in The Holiday, a kooky comedy about two ladies who swap lives for the holidays. Her hair is a lovely honey blonde, with subtle highlights, and she wears it in a long bob just above her shoulders. If you’re on the hunt for a low maintenance Christmas Day style, we would recommend this one. It’s cute, fun, flirty, and easy to put together.

Rachel McAdams in The Family Stone

In The Family Stone, Rachel McAdams shows off a much more natural and delicate style than we are used to seeing her with. Whilst it’s difficult to forget her super sexy rendition of Jingle Bell Rock, in Mean Girls, we actually prefer this warm chestnut tone. It brings out her eyes and shows that, just because it’s Christmas, your beauty regime doesn’t have to be a nightmare.

Donna Reed in It’s a Wonderful Life

We couldn’t draw up a Christmas list like this one and forget Donna Reed. Her star turn as Mary Hatch-Bailey, in It’s a Wonderful Life, continues to be one of the most celebrated female performances in cinema history. Her tresses look fantastic too, with romantic curls and a side parting both contributing to that sumptuous 40’s look.

Penelope Cruz in Vanilla Sky

Whilst not technically a Christmas film, we love the alluring style that Penelope Cruz sports so much, that we’re going to include it anyway. This film was released around Christmas and it caught the imagination of audiences, who left theatres scratching their heads at the twist ending and clever plot. Here, Penelope Cruz shines with a long and luscious look; steal it by using clip in extensions to add length and volume.

Renee Zellweger in Bridget Jones’ Diary

This is a holiday favourite for women everywhere, even though it makes most of them cry and polish off all of the alcohol in the house. It is a great movie, regardless of its Christmas scenes, but that feeling of being a little lost and alone during the holidays is what really makes it relatable. With a third instalment on the way, it’s only fair that we give some love to Bridget and her down to earth, low maintenance ‘do. It’s simple, real, and surely looks more like your hair on Christmas Day morning than you would like to admit.

Reese Witherspoon in Four Christmases

The festive rom-com Four Christmases might not have been a huge commercial hit, but it did give Reese Witherspoon a chance to sashay about our screens looking lovely. Her hair in the movie is flawless – not a strand out of place – and those perfectly cropped bangs are as far from a Christmas turkey as you can get. To steal them, wake up early on Christmas Day, get your clip in hair extensions out, and pretend that you always roll out of bed looking so fabulous.

Jennifer Lawrence in Joy

To come back to where we started, it’s time to take a closer look at Jennifer Lawrence in this Oscar favourite. As Miracle Mop inventor, Joy Mangano, the lovable star is bound to shine. We adore the shaggy, 80’s style bob her character wears in the film. It’s low maintenance, but still manages to retain a sense of style and edge. It’s every bit as sassy as the heroine she portrays and we think the actress might just win big again this year.
