Colour hair spray has been around for a few years now, but often overlooked or kept on the side for an emergency retouch. Nowadays, many more people – including influencers and hair stylists – started using it and promoting it on social media. But what’s all the fuss about, and most importantly: how to use a colour hair spray? Let’s find out together.

What Is Spray Hair Colour?

The answer is easy – spray hair colour is, well, spray hair colour. Usually in an aerosol can, this product can help you cover roots before your touch up appointment, add flashes of playful pastel colours to blonde hair, or daring funky strikes to darker tresses. In some cases it can also be used to give the illusion of a fuller mane in tricky areas such as temples and hairline, and it can sometimes be combined with a dry-shampoo formula to cover greys and simultaneously get rid of grease.

How Long Does Spray On Hair Colour Last?

Some products are designed with a stubborn formula created to last for a few days or even a few weeks, depositing pigmentation onto your hair cuticles. Some other options, instead, have a wash-out, friendly formula that can get easily brushed off at the end of your day or washed away with a shower.

Is Spray Colour Bad For Your Hair?

No, not at all. Unless you have an allergy to any of the ingredients used, these products are safe to use and won’t damage your hair like chemical hair dye or bleaching. If you’re unsure about the ingredients used in the formula of a specific temporary spray hair dye, become a true pro and find out how to spot and recognise the ingredients by reading our dedicated blog: How To Read Hair Labels Like A True Pro.

What Are The Disadvantages Of Colour Hair Spray?

The downside of a temporary hair colouring solution is that, well, it’s temporary. If you’re looking to add a different colour to your mane you will need to resort to permanent hair dye or even bleaching. Another safe, non-damaging option would be adding hair extensions to your natural colour! Remy hair extensions can be used to boost your balayage, add pastel colours to your mane or even create gorgeous contrasts and lowlights.

How To Use Hair Colour Spray?

The process is easy.

  • Thoroughly brush your hair to get rid of any knots and tangles with a detangling hair brush.
  • If necessary, use a sectioning hair clip to divide your hair.
  • Apply the colouring spray where needed. Make sure to keep a safe distance from furnitures and walls as you may accidentally spray it around yourself and stain them!
  • Spray for as long as you need. Longer spritzes mean denser, more intense colour. Lighter ones, instead, will offer you a more delicate touch of colour.

What Is The Best Hair Colour Spray?

There isn’t a real one-size-fits-all in this scenario, but here’s a list of some of my favourites and why.

L'Oreal Paris Colorista

This is a great option to add a nice touch of colour to your hair, and there is a great choice of different shades and types. Depending on the results you’re looking for, you can opt for the 1-day washable version or the longer lasting edition that will last up to 15 shampoo sessions. You can use them to add colourful streaks to your tresses or create a glamorous, trendy ombre effect.

TRESemme Root Touch Up Spray

This type of spray is available in a roster of four different natural shades: blonde, light brown, dark brown and black. It’s particularly indicated for those who wear their hair in natural shades and are simply looking to buy themselves some time in between salon appointments to retouch their colour rather than adding a different shade to their mane.

MANIC PANIC Spray

Manic Panic is a famous brand specialised in crazy colours and is a cruelty-free, vegan company. They are popular among those who like funky shades and vibrant, lively hues in their tresses with a great selection of hair colours and semi-permanent solutions! Their range also includes a silver spray, usually quite hard to find.

Can You Use Spray Hair Colour On Hair Extensions?

If you wear human hair extensions you know that they are a precious investment. Spray hair colours are safe to use on Remy hair extensions as long as they do not contain any alcohol or sulfates! Long-lasting options may stain lighter shades, so I recommend sticking to 1-day washable options if you’d like to give your mane an extra kick for a party, a night out or a festival look. Alternatively, you could look into jazzing things up by using hair tinsel! Read more about it in our dedicated blog: Hair Tinsel 101: Everything You Need To Know On How To Wear Sparkly Hair.

Conclusion:

Spray hair colour is a great alternative to hair dye and bleach, it can help you create some fresh, new colourful looks for a special occasion, and it can buy you some extra time (and save some money) in between salon appointments. These sprays are safe to use on Remy hair extensions so you can use them to spice things up whenever you’d like!
