When I think back to the days that first started wearing hair extensions, I remember I had so many questions. And honestly, they were mostly really simple questions. Which is why we’ve set this Q&A blog series up. We want to help you with all those niggly little questions no-one is quite sure about.

Our first blog talked about how hair extensions affect the health of your own hair. You can read it here. This time we get into the nitty-gritty around how long and how often you can wear your extensions for. Things like, can I wear my extensions overnight or should I take them out? These little questions pretty much drove me crazy in the early days, because although they seem so obvious, you just don’t know if no-one tells you! Which is why we’re going to help you… read on!

How long can you wear clip ins?

If you want to, you can wear clip in hair extensions all day and all night, but you MUST take them out before you go to sleep. And if your extensions start pulling or feeling uncomfortable, we’d recommend you adjust them.

Clip in extensions are the most popular type of hair extensions because of the way they let you experiment with your hair. As well as trying out different colours, you can mix it up with the different types of extensions on offer such as quad wefts, streaks, full sets, double wefts, curly, wavy and top ups. And because they’re easy to attach and super-durable, they’re loved by beginners and experts alike.

Because clip ins are not permanent hair extensions, you should take them out before you head to bed. That’s because although the clip-ins won’t damage your hair if you wear them correctly during the day, the more you wear them the quicker they will wear out and this will shorten the life of your extensions. You also risk damaging your natural hair and scalp if you wear your extensions to bed.

Because you won’t be wearing your clip ins to bed, you’ll find they last longer than permanent extensions if you take good care of them. You can wear your clip-ins all day, but if you feel they are putting pressure on certain areas of your scalp, you should either switch up the placement of your extensions or revisit how you applied them. Incorrect application can place excessive strain on your hair and scalp, so if you do feel uncomfortable, take them off and give your scalp a bit of a rest before putting them back in.

So, in short, if you’re applying your clip in extensions correctly without putting strain on your own hair and taking them off before sleeping and showering, then you can wear them all day. If you’d like some more tips on how to put your clip in hair extensions in, head on over to our YouTube channel to see the different ways you can clip in your Cliphair extensions.

Is it OK to wear my hair extensions every day?

You can wear your clip in hair extensions as often as you want, so long as you take care of them and fit them properly.

The beauty of clip in hair extensions is that you can wear them and remove them as often as you want. Remember that the more you wear them, the sooner they will wear out and the more you will need to care for them.

You should care for your clip in extensions by using a moisturising and repairing hair mask every 10 washes and spritzing on some Cliphair silky spray each time you finish a look. The result? A little bit of love every day for longer lasting extensions.

If your extensions feel uncomfortable, take them off and then clip them-in correctly to avoid tugging, making sure you put the clips in along the direction of your hair growth. This video is a really clear guide to show you how.

Is it OK to wear clip in hair extensions every day?

Absolutely! Wear your clip in extensions to look fab every single day if you want to. Make sure you take the time to put them in properly and take good care of them.

You can absolutely wear clip in extensions every day but bear in mind that doing this will mean they will wear out more quickly. Although wearing clip ins all day is not a problem, you have to make sure you are wearing them correctly. If you don’t wear them properly, you can put a lot of strain on your scalp causing headaches. The extensions may also pull at your own hair and weaken it.

If you find you’re getting headaches and straining your scalp or hair, give your extensions a break for a day or two to let your hair ease and your scalp relax.

Can I sleep in my extensions?

We hate to tell you this, but you really shouldn’t sleep in your clip in extensions. Wearing your extensions to bed can damage your extensions, hair, and scalp – who wants that?

Clip in hair extensions are non-permanent hair extensions, and this means they should be taken off before you go to bed. Sleeping in your hair extensions can result in two potential problems. Neither of which you’ll want to deal with!

We all toss and turn while we’re sleeping. This natural movement pulls at your hair and will tug at your extensions damaging your hair and scalp. The clips may also pop open while you’re sleeping and damage your scalp and hair.

Clip in extensions last longer than permanent extensions because you don’t wear them all the time and giving them a break while you’re sleeping is one of the reasons for this.

The bottom line? Give your scalp, natural hair, and clip-in extensions a rest every night when you go to bed. You’ll reap the benefits with longer-lasting extensions, and healthier hair and scalp.
