The end of 2014 is nigh, and it almost time to say goodbye to another year filled with celebrity scandals, epic movies, and super cool hairstyles. There have been some real shocks this year – who could forget Jennifer Lawrence and her leaked nudes? Or, The Big Bang Theory actress Kaley Cuoco and the furore that erupted around her decision to go for a dramatic chop?
If anything, 2014 has been the year of the Kardashian crew. It is not only Kim who is making waves around the world anymore, because Kendall and Kylie Jenner have become equally exciting fashion icons. It will take more than green highlights to supplant their big sister after she went ahead and ‘broke the internet,’ though. To celebrate the end of 2014 and usher in a new year, we have taken a look back at some of the best and worst hairstyles of the last twelve months.
Best Updo – Anna Paquin at the True Blood Premiere
The ever sassy Anna Paquin rocked a beautifully ornate updo on the red carpet this year, whilst attending a premiere for the final season of vampire drama True Blood. It was soft and sleek, yet well structured, with a slight quiff at the front. Whilst this is a fiddly style to replicate, it can be achieved with the help of some sturdy hairpins and a friend with steady hands.
Worst Updo – Kaley Cuoco at an Evening with ‘The Big Bang Theory’
We hate to say it, because we actually quite like the dramatic bob that Kaley Cuoco has now, but this really rather odd updo is just too messy to suit anybody – never mind this beautiful actress and her delicate, round face shape. It has no form; it looks like a wonky ‘do that a girl would fling her tresses into after the gym until she has time for a shower.
Best Hair Extensions – Rihanna at the Inaugural Diamond Ball
You can’t invite Rihanna to a diamond ball, and expect her not to turn up looking fabulous from tip to toe. The baddest babe in the music biz rocked a super long dark grey ponytail (grey hair has been a surprisingly big trend this year), which perfectly complemented the huge diamond necklace she also sported. It was an uncharacteristically soft look for Rihanna, but it is one which works well, because the dark of her extensions brings out her high cheekbones and cat like eyes.
Worst Hair Extensions – Dascha Polanco at the Variety Power of Women Gala
For those who don’t know Dascha Polanco, she is the stone cold fox who plays Dayanara Diaz in hit TV show Orange is the New Black. It is due back on our screens in 2014, but we hope that Polanco leaves these heavy extensions behind before she makes her return. We adore the colour – the subtle mix of blue and grey is really rather beautiful – but this style makes it all too clear that her tresses are fake. The trick with hair extensions is to make them indistinguishable from your own locks.
Best Bangs – Demi Lovato on ‘The X Factor’
This gorgeous X Factor judge has gone through a whole range of hairstyles in 2014. She first switched from blond to brunette, and then swapped her centre parting for a blunt and heavy fringe. Whilst her bangs are very choppy, she does have the features to pull them off – the blunt cut is great for girls with round faces, because it adds a little edge and sharpness to baby faced features.
Worst Bangs – Felicity Jones at the Met Gala
This actress is currently on top of the world, having impressed audiences all around the globe with her recent performance as Jane Wilde Hawking, in Stephen Hawking biopic Theory of Everything. However, she looked washed out and uninspired at the 2014 Met Gala. This messy fringe is drab, boring, and far too safe for a woman with such striking features. We reckon a heavier, blunter fringe may have been a little more stylish.
Best Colour – Kylie Jenner at the Billboard Music Awards
We can’t stop raving about Kylie Jenner and her daring dip dyed teal locks at the moment. This young starlet is shaping up to be a super cool fashion icon, and even though she has vowed to give up modelling to pursue a music career, we think she will continue to inspire fashion fans all around the world for some time to come.
